I bought this camera as a step up from my point-and-shoot pocket digital and what a difference! The pocket camera is for snapshots while the D80 is for photographs. It has all of the flexibilty I need to control exposure, focus, metering, and some limited in-camera editing. It feels well balanced in my hand, is not heavy, and will allow me to add additional lenses and other Nikon accessories easily. Although other cameras offer higher resolution, the megapixel count on the D80 is fine for prints as large as 20X30, a size I can't ever imagine exceeding. The LCD is a good size and bright enough to easily see in all but the brightest outdoor conditions. Unfortunately, the LCD cannot be used to compose the picture before it is taken. All of that must be done through the eyepiece. It is a feature I wish the camera had, but in order to get it I would have had to step up to the D90 and I didn't need the video capabilities included in that higher priced camera. Overall, I have been pleased with the pictures I have taken and feel that this camera and all of its features will be with me a long time before I outgrow it.

I did alot of reading prior to ordering this model and found that this camera has alot of bells & Whistles that take time to learn. You can use the automatic setting but you might as well use your point & Shoot for that. I purchased several books for the d80 but still found that to use this camera it would take more time than I had to spend.

The first round of photos I took and printed out turned out about the same quality as my point & shoot digital cameras.
For me I decided to step down to the D60 model which comes with 2 lenses and is smaller and lighter.

I'm using this camera for my digital photography class at Ohio State. I have a Nikon N75 and it always created awesome pictures, but I wanted to get that in digital. It was either between the D90 or the D80. I checked my budget and bought the D80. Awesome camera! A lot of bang for the buck. Very Very clear pictures. Only complaint I would have is the flash is not very strong. I have to buy a new flash sometime soon to compensate, but overall, great buy!

After putting around 80,000 shots on my D40 (purchased it the month it came out), I decided that it was time to replace it for a new camera body. When I read about all the cameras within my price range, I saw that my old lenses would work on the D80, so purchased that body instead of another D40.
Due to severe weather I haven't had the opportunity to really put it through it's steps yet, but I have been out in below zero weather one time and am totally impressed with the clarity and detail over the D40. I also use my camera to sell glassware and goods on the internet so have been giving it a workout more on still photography, a few hundred shots so far.
So while I haven't put it through it's paces completely yet, thusfar I believe it to be superioer to the D40 in clarity and with the point focus, it is really making my still and close-up photography much clearer.

I mainly need a camera for taking photos of my 4 active kids (age range 7 months to 5 years). I kept missing photos with my old camera (Canon SX-IS) because it was so slow, but I couldn't find another point and click camera that I liked. The D80 is FAST and easy to use even for a novice like me. I was able to take photos immediately after taking the camera out of the box, and have been able to increase my use of some of the features as I go through the manual. I'm so glad I bought this camera...I thought about it for a long time as I didn't want to spend so much money (I also bought the Nikkor 18-200 AF/VR/etc. lens that sells for about $750), but I finally decided that I couldn't tolerate missing any more shots.

This is an excellent camera for my needs. it takes excellent photos at home and outdoors. it takes very good quality portraits as well. it is a great body and has many options to upgrade the lens. flash is ok but i will need to upgrade to a better flash for many indoor shots.

All the auto or programmed exposures are wonderful but there are times when you want a picture to be the one in your imagination--and manual operation does that the best. I often wish Nikon would come out with a digital Nikon FM camera. Until they do, this is super.
We've taken trips from the Keys in Florida to fishing in Alaska and am thrilled with the results everytime. I use it at school and to take pictures of my grandchildren. And my grandson uses it to take pictures of me. It's simple and complex--depending on your level of understanding of photography. The one shortcoming I thought it had was that it does not have a self cleaning sensor. Having grown up on film, this sounded BAD. Watch the Youtube video on how to clean your sensor and that will take care of it.

I have an old film Nikon and I have always loved the photos I've taken with it. I have been disappointed up to now in the quality of photos I've taken with digital cameras. I've had this camera for a couple of years now. I recently decided to get one for my dad because I love it so much. I've never had any problems with it. I get consistently sharp, rich photographs, and I barely know what I'm doing (which is improving). My dad is a professional photographer and loves his new camera as well. We bought this for our 16 year old daughter mainly because it has been the only item on her xmas list since October when we didn't get it for her birthday. All she has done is smile and take fantastic photos since. Valley Forge has never looked better, the traveling shots are as if we were standing still. Right after I took it out of the box I shot a wedding. I am in Pakistan so unlike USA, where wedding clothes are mostly in black and white, wedding clothes in Pakistan are full of bright colors and the result I got was stunning with excellent details. I used Nikon 18-200 mm lens which is another great buy for the money. I didn't get a chance to read the manual and considering I have been using Canon for the last 6 years it wasn't too dificult to understand the Camera menu options and I was able to figure out most without reading any documentation. I had some problem with the exposure and focusing but it was due to the fact that I didn't read the manual so I can not blame the camera for that. Picture saving was extremely fast with Sandisk Extreme III 20 MB/S card. It was a joy to have continuous shooting without a lag in saving pictures. Camera feels very solid in hand but then it is heavy so the pros becomes the cons when you have to hold it for a longer duration. For the price I have paid for this camera, due to the new D90 in the market now, it is a best buy but then I am not sure how better is D90 to this so can't judge. I was able to use my old lenses for Nikon which I used when I had the Nikon SLR almost a decade ago. All of them were compatible with the D80. Ritz is giving great discount on this camera and an unbelieveable deal for the price. I have found Ritz a great store to buy things from and their customer service is excellent !. You can't go wrong buying from Ritz if you are getting a great price for the equipment !.

I use this camera for landscapes and artsy pictures. The controls are east to use and give the user multiple options to snap their shots. On auto settings, sometimes the camera takes a little while to adjust the shot before snapping; sometimes it won't take the shot at all and I have to change to manual. For the most part though, I'm on manual all the time.

I have had problems with point and shoot digital cameras. In sunlight, I could never could seldom see the lcd screen well enough to compose a photo. Since I already had nikon lenses, the sale of the Nikon D80 camera body proved to be the best value for me. The SLR viewing can't be beat for composition of photos. Saves a lot of waste of extra shots just to get one good one.

I'm a former journalist and semi-photojournalist, and this camera is the next best thing to the Nikon D300, which is what many of the professionals use. I use my D80 for landscape, photojournalism, portraiture, and action. The colors are bright and vivid and the controls easy to use. It's just a little heavy, but it's worth it. I HIGHLY recommend this camera for the semi-pro or pro photographer who can't quite afford the D300. It's the best deal, and you'll get pro quality images.

The D80 is exactly what I expected: a top quality product with a reputation to back it up. I have also used Canon and Sony products. The Sony also was top-notch, but it doesn't have the history of dependability yet. Canon Rebel XTi does not deliver the same quality and is very unpredictable in shooting situations.

I use it with Tamron AF 18-270mm lens, which covers all my needs, so I don't have to change lenses. Still, the camera is somewhat bulky, which creates some problems when packing for travel. This is one of my favorite cameras. It has extremely fast shutter action outside. It needs an attachment for good inside photos when shooting action shots in a gymnasium, for example. Excellent for portraits, landscapes, etc. Just did a shoot at a soccer game...sharp, clear photos that captured all the action.

I have had the D80 for quite some time and use a variety of Lenses for different kinds of events from slow weddings to fast past soccer games. Check out the New D90 (Upgrade to the D80) not to much has changed. Showing you the D80 is a great camera for the price. As the say, More bang for Your Buck. Plus for you new guys to DSLR, there are tons of lens from the old style to the new that the D80 can use. Just get it, you will not regret it.

A wonderful camera! A little tricky learning how to use the more in depth controls, but the learning curve was very quick. The only thing I don't like very much is the autofocus can be off, but as I rarely use it, it doesn't much matter to me. I would recommend this camera to any photographer.

Originally purchased a D60 package, had more bells and whistles, but the 3 point AF system was serious lacking, it couldn't track and focus on my very active 4 year old. Returned it for the D80 package, which, while older technology, produces much more consistent photos and is better able to focus on my daughter. I do wish the package I purchased came with a Nikkor 55-200 lens with VR rather than the off brand that was offered at the time.

i have been experimenting with this camera for about a month now and its very easy to get used to for beginners. the controls are great and placed in the most reachable areas when taking a picture. the only thing i find bad about this camera is the bracketing system can be limiting, only 3F. but that's if you want to take HDR photography and things like that. other than that this camera is a must have if you want a first DSLR because of its comfort, vast creativity opportunities, great controls, and the high quality from Nikon.

This camera has endured a lot. Plenty of mud, dust, snow, ice, and bitter cold (-50c). Right now I live and work in Antarctica and this camera has survived it all. Has also taken a few tumbles and continues to work fine. Can't say the same for the lenses.

Not to great in low light, auroras, and low light indoors. pretty grainy. I am sure the lenses have a part in that as well. New lenses coming when I get back to the states. (and probably a D300)

Quick focus, good exposure. Our camera has a short preflash that occurs 150ms (I measured on an oscilloscope) before the main flash & shutter opening. It's supposedly used for TTL exposure compensation, but also results in flash photos of my daughter with closed eyes much of the time. I think the delay is long for this camera, and another unit tested in the mall didn't have this problem, so probably an anomaly. Otherwise, takes good photos & VR lens is worth the extra $, as you can handhold indoors with crisper results. We have an older D100 & focus is sharper on D80 & VR lens much quieter. Seems batteries are used faster in D80, probably due to larger LCD. Recommend assuming the preflash issue will be resolved in a second unit/repair.

I owned a Nikon d-50 for two years prior to buying the d-80. Wish I had bought the d80 first. Great camera for everything from family shots or travel photos. 11 point auto focus makes sport photography a snap. I use it with the NIKON 18-200 VR and the shots are clearly amazing. Controls like ISO, AF, and WB are at your fingertips so you don't even take your eye away to change them.

If you are looking for a DSLR I will definitely recomend this one, you can do so many in-camera adjustments and finishing that you will not need a PC. the camera has multiple lighting mode built in that you will not need to worry whether you have proper lighting or not, let the D80 do it for you. I did a lot of research and comparison between Nikon D80/D40x/ Olympus 510 and Canon EOS XTI, I chose the Nikon for the quality, features and strong construction. It is complicated if you are a first timer to SLR/DSLR, you will find yourself lost with so much info to learn, i will recommended to those who have use SLR or other DSLR prior in life. Great Camera. Not very different from a D200. With good glass you have a serious camera. If you think you want it. buy it. only problem can be the meter, which is not a big deal, just adjust for it. iso 100 is mad clean. PAst iso 800 it gets fuzzy but get a good PS plug in. Still very usable. Good size.

I switched from an N90 film camera and have had point an shoot digitals before. Now I have the best of both worlds. I love the depth of field preview that isn't on the D40x. This camera is great. All my lenes are working fine with it.
Nikon really hit a homerun with this. I feel it was made for me.
I haven't felt this way about a camera since I got my frist Canon AE-1 silver body....dates me.

I've used cameras from a couple of major producers but this is my second Nikon and my first D-SLR. This thing is great! This camera is a realy great camera. Its light, and easy to carry around with you wherever you go. The picture quality is excellent. Its an all around great camera for anyone who would like a light weight but really great camera.

Can get the same results with a Fuji Finepix S9000. Finepix is a much better camera. D80 gives you 10mp but I get better detail from the 8mp Fuji S9000.

I bought this camera on a whim while in New York [...]. I absolutely love it! The construction is strong and sturdy, and the controls all seem to be in the right place. The shutter is quick and responsive, although it is not as sensitive as a Canon in dim rooms.

Nikon D80 DSLR is a one of a kind, I recommend this with a nikon 18-200mm lens. You would not need anything else.

Taken to botanical gardens, NHL games and MLB games. Love the pictures. Not all turn out, but that's expected. Using the 50mm f1.8 and 55-200mm zoom (both Nikon lenses).

This is an exceptional piece of equipment by Nikon. If you combine it with the Nikon DX 18-200 mm lens, that pretty much takes care of all of my photography needs.

The D80 snaps into action quick and immediately readies for the next shot. The focus is quick for me, and the AF does the trick in most cases. When I do snap the camera into manual mode, the controls are super intuitive. The viewfinder display makes perfect sense, even to an amatuer photographer. And the pictures taken w/ this camera are absolutely amazing. The color is vibrant and the detail is sharp (probably has something to do w/ the Nikon lenses too). About my only complaint is that it is plastic and the auto exposure tends to over expose it at times (easily fixable).

If you owned the N80 film camera, you will love the D80. In terms of features, picture quality, and price, it's the perfect blend. I particularly liked the fact that I could use my old lenses with this camera. The kit lens are fine too, but still prefer the fixed focal length lenses.

Ever been to Disney World and had all those Disney Camera people approach you? Well, they use NIKON D70 & D80s. One would have thought that Disney would use some mega expensive camera.
I just happen to be looking at getting a new Camera. The picture quality is superb for the everyday user / hobbyist as myself. It actually has much more capabilities than I need.

Most camera bodies are quite good nowadays, so my advice would be: spend a little less on your body, a little more on your lens. If you can't afford a D80 and a great lens, get a D50. The lens makes the camera.The kit lenses that come with the D80 aren't terrific, though they're no worse than those that come with some Canon bodies. However, if you really want to turn your camera into a force of nature, go with the nikkor 18-200VR lens. It's about $[...], almost as much as the camera itself, but it's sharp as a tack through the entire range, and it has VR or vibration reduction, which actually enhances your camera's ability to take pictures in lower light (you can shoot at lower ISOs with less shake, and therefore, improved sharpness). Add that to the fact that you can shoot really wide angle and impressive zoom all in one lens, and you've built yourself an enviable photo package without having to lug a ton of gear around. The lens is so good, and Nikon's production speed so poor, that there's a 6-month waiting list for the lens. But it's well worth the wait.ValueThe last issue is price. In my opinion, the D80's customization, performance, build quality and design are worth the price. The EOS 400D is $[...] cheaper and a very good camera. But if you're a more discerning photographer who can see the bonuses you get with the D80 you'll consider your money well spent.

I've owned several Nikon products and while none have ever disapointed me, this one has definitely gone above and beyond all of the others. The D80, unlike many other consumer level DSLRs, provides a professional level product at an excellent price! I've used mine to shoot weddings, portraits, nature, and anything else I feel like. Nikon really loaded this one!
