Takes great pictures. I took 35MM film pics prior the the L-18 so, I had to adjust to the lag time. I take a lot of pics of my grandkids so, I learned to "anticipate" with the youngest ones to overcome the lag. I have had the L-18 about 18 months and the camera still works great and,takes excellent video too. Around Christmas I dropped it about 3 feet onto cement. The base segment of the telescoping lense was cocked to one side and the camera made a clicking noise (like it was trying to retract the lense). I pulled the batteries and put the camera in my pocket, thinking it was a total loss. When I got home I popped the lense back into position, put the batteries back in and was surprised when it worked perfectly again. I always use the wrist strap but this time I did not and-oops.
Do not install the software that comes with the camera. I did and the pics were distorted when imported into my computer. I thought it was the SDHC memory card but with help from my camera store and others I isolated the problem to the Nikon software. I now just import the pics using windows software with no problems.
I take pics of my grandson's roller hockey, baseball and basketball games. Great for sports and action shots. I like the auto red eye removal setting on the flash menu.
I would recommend this camera to anyone just getting into digital pics. Lot of features but easy to use and inexpensive.

I was a news photographer back in the stone age, so I think my photo standards are pretty high. This little cigarette-pack-sized box, along with a new entry-level laptop and photo printer, can do more than two or three grand worth of analog SLR and darkroom equipment could do just a couple decades ago.I bought Nikon because of my past experience with the brand, and I am certainly glad that I did. I have looked at other entry-level digitals, but I got a lot more for my money with the Old Reliable. Now I just need a good excuse to buy one of those snazzy new Nikon digital SLR bodies to go with my old professional equipment!I read lots of reviews before buying. A couple reviews mentioned problems with the lens getting stuck in the "out-open" position and a "lens error" message, along with a lack of warranty support from Nikon. I had the first problem after a few days but I just walked home and put in fresh batteries -- problem solved. I prevented the second problem through research -- make sure you buy from an Authorized Nikon Dealer like Ritz, or Nikon will not honor the warranty. This is my first digital camera and I couldn't be happier with it. I used to be a newspaper photographer back in the stone ages, and even won a statewide award, so my standards are fairly high. This little box (only slightly bigger than a cigarette pack) does what a couple or three grand in good-quality analog SLR and darkroom equipment used to do just a few years ago.

So far, I am mostly using it to take photos of ebay items and to do research on future home improvements while dog-walking. Downloading the photos to my laptop couldn't be easier; I think my dog could do it. Seriously. But she's a pretty smart dog.

I received a free Epsom printer since I bought last year's model and I haven't used the printer yet--it didn't have a USB cable so I had to order one--but it will be my workhorse since it can print in color or b&w, on plain paper for documents or on photo paper.

I bought the camera for my wife. After two weeks she almost has a 2 gig flash card filled! Does she like it? YES!!! It has a nice big screen. With only a few buttons. It's not confusing. The auto feature makes it super simple to get great photos even in low light. Zooming in to get that close up has never been so easy. She loves the color as well. Overall, this is a great buy and I like using it too.

I have had this camera for 6 months. I purchased this camera for business use and it worked well until the flash burned out. It still takes good pictures. I would have expected this type of failure since I am consistently bumping into things. Great camera. Easy to use. Everyone who sees my pics are asking if I used "special" settings vs. "point and shoot" and I have only used "point and shoot" and the zoom and obtained great detail in flowers, etc. 3" screen is wonderful for adult vision - eliminates pulling out the reading glasses to take a distance shot!! After lots of use, still using original batteries. Love the camera.

This is my first digital camera and I love it!!! It's small enough that I actually keep it in my purse and take it with me everywhere I go. I have taken over 100 photos and they all came out very clear, even in bad conditions. I have gotten so many compliments on my pixs and the camera itself. I truly recommend this camera to anyone!!!

This camera has great construction. The photo screen is bright enough to be seen in sunny conditions and very vibrant colors. The photos come out great when printed at Ritz. I haven't tried at other places to get prints. This was actually purchased for my daughter who is 7-years old. She has been taught to take care of cameras and not to drop them or abuse them. The only complaint I would have about this camera is the ability to get to the extra settings. It's not as user-friendly as some other models.

For [$] this is a great package. Its best thing is that does not take ages to initialize when you press the power button unlike other cameras that I have had in the past. Also the large LCD screen is definately a plus. Another good thing is its compact size as it does not take much space. I bought a small camera pouch with a belt clip so I can put it on when I am out and about. Most other times its in my back pack. Overall a great dealfor a little camera...a definate buy!!

Bought one a few months ago really liked the large LCD, common AA batteries, SD cards can be found almost anywhere at a reasonable price. I liked the camera so much I bought 2 more and I am giving them for Christmas gifts.

The one thing that I noticed about the camera is its zoom and its easy auto focus modes.I haven't experimented with a lot of built in scene modes but it seems to do its work. For a price range of 100$ it seems to be a budget friendly camera. This one records movies with sound but the sound clarity was not good. Another disappointing thing that I noticed is the noise the camera makes. Its irritating at times

My daughter received this as a birthday present and it has been such a great camera. It was easy enough for her to learn all about it and understand how it functions. She has taken several videos with it and the quality is quite good. This camera takes great pictures and even in the hands of a teenager the pictures are rarely shaky or distorted. We upgraded from an old S1. The camera is even more user friendly, quick to get to the menus and some of the features. Holding is much easier; fingers don't get in the way of the lense as with the old S1. We also have a D200. This little camera is nice to have also for when we want to have a camera along but not have to carry the big heavy. It is also great for putting photos on the web. We have given several of the L18's as gifts. Nikon manuels are very user friendly, I love Nikon.

I purchased this camera for a trip to climb Pico de Orizaba, an 18,500' volcano in Mexico - I wanted a simple, durable camera and the L18 exceeded my expectations. It was easy to use in pretty harsh conditions and took great photos at the summit. The easy auto mode is a great feature when you want to get a quick picture in a situation that doesn't offer you a lot of time to set up a shot (e.g. on a rope team on a steep face of a mountain). This is a great camera for the price and I highly recommend it!

got this camera 4 my daughter - wanted something small and the price was right . Both of us are really amazed at the picture clarity . The detail is right on, great dof . colors are spot on and the image stabelization works terrific.we were Canon buffs but this one has changed our ways - - - you can not go wrong if you want a all around camera and buy this one - only reason i didn't give it a 5 was because we haven't had it long enough to say about durability - if it holds up then it get a 5 rating

This camera is great for a beginner/casual user. The setup was very easy and menus were well laid out. I haven't even checked the owners manual on any of the controls, it is that easy. The CoolPix L18 comes in a variety of colors and is really a pocket size camera. The online price was actually better than the retail store on a head to head basis. I gave up instant gratification for savings, a fair trade in my opinion. My only complaint would be the battery housing is a bit tricky to close when you put the batteries in. Overall a great buy, a great little camera and very easy to use!

We run a residential electrical service company, we have these on all of our service truck for the electricians to document all of the work they do, before and after. They are used with construction guys in extreme and rough conditions and hold up remarkable well. I love the 3" display. The anti-shake is wonderful as is the face-finder feature. I enjoy being able to move the photo around once it is taken and crop it as necessary. I love this camera. The pictures hardly ever come out bad! The only bad thing that happened to the camera was my cousin dropped it and it broke on the lens. Make sure you get a warranty. (I have to wait 4-8 weeks to get it fixed!)

This is a nice and good looking camera with lots of features packed into it. It is compact and easy to use and fits in any pocket. It has a large 3" screen which is bright and with great colors. I am sorry that had to give it such a low rating, and the main reason is the technical support at Nikon. I had the camera for only 10 days, working wonderfully, and without any warning or sign I went to turn it on and suddenly the screen was mostly darkened like if it had suffered a short circuit burning about 90% of it and only leaving a partial corner working. It was the strangest thing ever. With all honesty I can say that this camera had not suffered any type of abuse or mishandling from the day I bought it until this incident happened. It was intact, without a scratch. [...] I was planning on purchasing for next Christmas one of their SLR expensive cameras with my bonus from work, [...]At work and in my personal circles, I have been telling everyone about my experience with this company, so be aware! I will certainly switch to Canon who are legendary with their products and service.

I bought this camera for a present, but I tried it out before giving it away. It's a point and shoot, so it points and shoots. It is stylish and small and the pics come out very good for this kind of camera. There is a shutter lag between pushing down the shutter til when the pic is actually taken. I suggest pre focusing by halfway pushing down the button and letting the camera focus before taking the pic. But, the pics were very good and the camera is easy to tote along anywhere.

It provides very high quality pictures for such a small camera. Once you learn how to set up the various modes of operation it all seems simple. However, getting to that point can be long and arduous. I use it for recording family events and occasional scenery. Got an outstanding photo of a full moon in a slightly clouded sky. THAT was surprising.
