[The reason I waited so long to review this product is because I wanted to REALLY get used to its functionality before I wrote ANYTHING. Many months (including a trip to Australia) later, I'm ready to review.]I fell in love with this camera simply cause it's GREEN. I'm oddly fixated in green things and this detail is reason I first looked at this camera. I was honestly skeptical about getting this camera because I was afraid the quality of photographs would not be up to par of my d80. Of course, it DOESN'T share the same quality, but it's not bad once you keep in mind it's just a point and shoot.With that said, I use this camera as an everyday camera. I like the ease of carrying this camera around because I know I can get good photos without worrying about carrying my (bulky) d80 around. I ABSOLUTELY love the size of this camera! It easily fits into jacket pockets and purses. My worst habit was not EVER carrying a camera with me because they were too bulky and heavy. This camera was the perfect solution! It's so small, I carry it with me everywhere I go - this camera never leaves my side.I love the ease of taking pictures with this camera! I literally got the camera in the mail just before I left for Australia. There was no time to "learn" how to use the camera. I literally had to learn to use it as I got to Australia (I left the manual at home). I can now comfortably and easily change the ISO, the camera usage (from still images to movies and back), flash on and off, changing the macro on and off, and even increasing and decreasing the exposure.The one downside to having to know everything is the fact that I had to LEARN where everything was - the camera setup is not the best. I feel like Nikon could have done a better job with the overall set up of menu displays and camera functions (changing between shooting modes, etc). My previous point and shoot was so much easier to learn!One feature that completely amazes me (and people who use my camera) is the playback! The circular dial allows you to (literally!) dial (or spin, as my friend put it) through the images. Or, if you prefer, you can do the simple left right clicking of the dial. Even better is the fact that you can zoom out of the images and get up to a 5x5 grid review of all your images. I love how easily I can find photos with this! Perhaps my favorite function of the camera is the "d-lighting" function. (It's that cute little smiley face icon / silver dot of a button at the top of the camera on the left side.) If you review your picture and you think it is a little dark at first glance, push this magical button and you'll see an alternate (possibly better!) image.One downside to digital cameras (in general, not just to this particular model) is the noise issue. With darker images, I tend to turn up the ISO, but with this camera, it noticably increases the noise issue as well. I shot a concert with this camera (at ISO 800) and there was a noticable noise issue. Another downside to the camera, is that it sometimes takes a little while to turn on the camera. There have been times where I have to push the on/off button twice (or three times!) before it turns on. Here is a wise hint I'd recommend: Turn on the automatic shut off time to 30 seconds. There have been times I have pulled the camera out of the case (purchased separately) and found it turned on. Don't waste your battery on account of it being on when you don't even know it!A couple of notes on the charger: -I wish it was made into a compact little charger! (You know, the ones that plug directly into the wall) Instead, Nikon made its cord and (actual) charger separately. -One perk to this separation is the fact that it plugs into my d80 charger as well (so if I lose either one, I have a back up)!Overall review:Would DEFINITELY recommend this camera to anyone, of any photographic background. It's a really easy camera to get to know and use. I carry it around with me everywhere I've been since November. That includes a trip to Australia, various family functions, dinners with friends, spontaneous photo excursions with cute kids, roadtrips, and those everyday "I-wish-I-had-a-camera-to-take-a-picture-of-THAT" moments in life.

I am an avid Nikon DSLR owner, but my wife is a Point n Shoot kinda gal, she has gone thru the gammut of PNS camera, Kodak, Sony, Etc.. Most of them are either not small, have low rez, or have WAY too slow lag time (oops missed the shot) and battery consumption is insane. I baought this one for her, first of all because I favor Nikon and second all because she favors green. This camera has been "THE BEST" little point and shoot that I have personally ever seen...stick with Nikon..ONLY NIKON!!!

I love this camera! I've only had it for a few weeks now, but I have used it every week that I have had it. Very nice, large, display; easy setup and menu choices; very nice photo display on camera; very lite to carry; easy to change picture-styling options; and just a great buy overall. A few of my co-workers will be buying the same type of camera for Xmas too! Only con: longer lag time time between shots in the scene/profile mode. Not a problem if you are not taking shot after shot, but can be a be a little annoying if you are.

Overall, I love it. It has replaced my Canon PowerShot SD1000

Great little camera fo the money. It fits easily into a small bag so I have it with me all the time. I use it for work regularly, and for personal use. I actually went back and bought another for my daughter for Christams, who is very hard on electronic equipment, but think this one will hold up to her less than gracefull manerisms just fine. Controls are simple, and downloading is very quick and easy. Strongly recommend it.

I bought this camera a few months ago and I love it!! It is the best camera I have ever owned and takes amazing pictures. I love the PicMotion feature, which turns normal videos or pictures in to fun slideshows with music. It does take a long time to take a picture when it is on no-flash, but that's not that big of a problem. I most definitely recommend this camera to anyone!

I love mine so this one is a Christmas gift for my son. Believe me, if I can figure this camera out - anyone can! Someone told me to get the ISO setting high enough and all you indoor pictures will be good. The only ones I've been deleting are the one's someone has stepped in front of. Great camera for group pictures!

Haven't found much that I don't like about this camera so far. I love all the fun settings that you can use (fireworks, night, party, sports etc...) and its really easy to switch from one to the other. This camera has a nice sturdy construction as well. Love that I'm offsetting almost 2 tons of carbon emissions too :-)

The Nikon CoolPics line of cameras has an outstanding reputation. I have met several people that have had one or years and love it.

The S52 carries on this reputation with it's crisp, clear photos and easy-to use controls.

The only real drawback that I have found is some quirks in very low lighting in a large area. Avoid this and this is a really great camera!

I had this camera for a short time and the images looked fine. I'm giving it an average rating because the contuction does seem a bit flimsy (felt like the scroll whell might come off at any time, especially after jostling in your pocket for awhile). This camera might be perfect for somebody with smaller fingers - I found it almost too slim and slippery for my liking. However, it does offer good images, nice LCD and pretty quick start-up time. Another point to mention is that some users might find their finger slipping over the lens on the top left side of the camera - if you can adjust to that, then it might be a suitable camera for you.

It is a great camera compare to the similar model from Casio, Sony, Olympus, which has no extended lens outside of the body. Picture quality at low light and moving target would be better than the other counterpart. But Canon's snap camera would have the best quality in the low light and to moving target. Unfortunately, lens on Cannon's camera would extend. My daughter has broke two cameras by dropping on carpet floor, one is CASIO and the other one is Canon.

I received a defective camera, initially - there would be a black line across the screen, that moved as I shaked the camera!
Overall, the camera takes nice pictures, especially in macro setting, as it was one particular feature I was looking for.
The camera feels "plasticky" and has a rattleing noise when shaken. I read other reviews with the same comment. I guess it's a "feature" of this camera.
So far satisfied with it.

This is an early x-mas gift purchase for my 10.5 yr old daughter who is constantly shooting photos from her cell phone. Upon receiving it, I decided to test it out in advance. Being a graphic designer and Production Manager for a newspaper I have exceedingly high requirements and an intensely scrutinizing "trained eye". This little gem blows away my high-end model Fuji FinePix which I use only for pleasure (not professional use). Bottom line, be sure to buy a b/up battery to keep charged, as well as at least one Kingston 2GB 50x Elite Pro Memory Card (what a steal!), and YOU ARE SET.

This camera is easy to use and learn. Large 3 inch screen is a pluse. Easy to use control wheel. Easy set up from opening of box. Excellent still digital photos quality. Excellent video quality. I haven't had any concerns about battery life but I would purchase another for long trips. Batteries are inexpensive from Duracell.

In compact cameras, I particularly like the "internal focussing" lens. In my experience the protruding lens is prone to damage and malfunction. I have had three cameras which I had to replace because of this.

This camera did not come with a case which I feel is important to prevent it from becoming scratched up but it also did not come with a storage card. For the price and the cause, you cannot go wrong with this camera. It is very easy to use and the controls are very straight forward. The photo
capture speed seems to be slow but that may be just the mode it was in. Overall I would definitely recommend this camera.

I like the design, especially the 3x zoom that is all internal (no external telescoping lens). Some of the presets appear to work quite well, and this camera seems to have potential. However, obtaining great quality pics in some circumstances does not seem straight forward. A number of my low light pics have been grainy. I am working on this, but it may simply be a limit of the machine.

I bought this for my wife, who is not very tech-savvy and it'll be good for her as soon as she reads up on the controls, etc. The biggest flaw is the lag time when taking pictures and it'll be easy/frustrating to miss KEY moments. I also haven't been able to shoot extreme close-ups either (Instruction say it will focus 2.5 inches away from the subject, but it seems more like 10-12 inches). I think it's one of the better, if not best, cameras out there for [$], but I'm most disappointed with the lag time and that would be only reason I wouldn't recommend it(and may return it). That said, it's slim, sleek, probably more than sufficient for beginners on a budget and may prove all my above claims wrong after I spend some time with the owner's manual.

Needed a good point and shoot to take when DSLR would be too bulky. Have a Nikon D70 and it's just to big to lug around for some situations. This is a perfect compromise. 9MP, 3x optical zoom (internal to boot). Plus, the eco green was much cheaper than the regular.

My family and I went to Mrytle Beach in August. Before leaving we decided to take a family photo on the beach with everyone dressed alike. We used three different cameras and the Nikon Coolpix took the best pictures. They were extremely clear and easy to see because the LCD panel was so large. Needless to say, the Nikon Coolpix wasn't mine at the time, but I can say that I do own one now. I can't wait to use it on my next trip to New England in the fall.

I've taken this camera on several vacations this past summer, and the pictures all turned out beautiful. I used to be a Canon loyalist and disliked the lower-priced Nikon models. However, this model produces great pictures with vibrant colors (at least most of the time). I also really like the fact that you can edit (crop and contrast colors) right on the camera. Another difference that I noticed was that the setting for landscape night pictures is spectacular. Downtown buildings at nighttime will actually show up on this camera.

This camera is awesome. It is seriously tiny. I have big monster hands with fat fingers and it is still very comfortable to use. The menus for changing"scene" types could be a little more intuitive, but read the manual and it will all be very clear. It takes absolutly great pictures. I wish it came with a case, but what can you do it is a great deal. If you want a great "on the fly" camera that takes awesome pictures and takes up little space in your pocket or purse this is the one. the metal construction make it feel durable. I was looking at a Canon, but glad I got this Nikon based on the construction and options. The Canon's I was looking at had a plastic body. I can be pretty clumsy and I don't like stuff breaking if I drop it. I am looking forward to using this camera for the years to come. as soon as you turn it on it is pretty much ready to take a picture and picture to picture time is really low as well. Go green get this camera you will not be sorry.

The great thing about this camera is that it is so easy to use and figure out. I hate cameras that, once you hand it off to someone to take a picture for you, it doesn't take the "right" pictures, comes out blurry, etc. NOT this camera. It's so simple and the pictures come out really clear. Figuring out what settings to use in what lighting conditions is still tricky, but once you've got that down it's a real fun camera and you get tons of compliments on it. I love how the lens stays IN the camera, making the camera even more compact. The LCD screen is huge and make it easy for viewing. It's also GREEN! Who out there has a green camera? Not very many, and it also helped to offset 2 tons of CO2 by purchasing this product. It's a good camera for you and the environment!(:

I have really enjoyed this camera since i purchased it a few months back. I have taken pictures outside and inside in all varieties of light and 95% of the time the pictures come out great! The camera's settings are easy to navigate and really do make a difference, especially when taking pictures at night. I love the design (as do all who come accross it). The LCD screen is big and bright and the green color is unique, which I really like. As a lamen in the world of photography I can tell you that this is a great camera for someone who's looking for clear,crisp pictures with little knowledge of how to make pictures clear or crisp.

I LOVE this camera. It takes beautiful pictures, and the sports setting is awesome (I just figured that out). The only complaint I have is that the buttons are right over the shutter, so it took a little getting used to. I got my fingers in a few pictures.

Being used to a digital SLR, I find this camera lacking in abilities. Would return it but it is too much hassel because of internet purchasing. Would not recommend it to a friend.

Great camera and easy upgrade from my old Sony 5mp. Perfect for any college student to capture some awesome memories! Pictures area always vivid and turn out amazing...little need to edit colors, just crop and you've got a masterpiece.

I was so excited to receive my brand new CoolPix S52 (Eco-Green), and the photos were really quite excellent. I was also pleased that it was very easy to learn how to use the various camera features. HOWEVER, when I used the movie or voice recording modes there was a very high level of awful static sound recorded EVERY TIME. I upgraded to the best memory card I could find, and that did not make a bit of difference.

Naturally, I returned the camera under Warranty (with sample video/audio) to Nikon TWICE for repair or replacement. To my dismay, they returned it to me both times stating "Your unit was thoroughly checked and was found completely within the factory standards". They also said not to expect the sound quality to be excellent because it didn't have a "sophisticated microphone". Maybe so, but it shouldn't be so poor that you cringe when you listen to the playback.

I was so disappointed that I sold the camera used and replaced it with a Canon PowerShot SD850 IS (Digital Elph) that I am extremely happy with (both photos and sound are fantastic).

Bottom line - if recording movies is important to you, don't buy this camera. It will be a big disappointment and a waste of money. If you decide to buy it, be sure to test the movie and sound recording modes soon after you receive it to be sure you are satisfied.

Most of my photos are of pets, group shots with friends, and travel scenery. Since I am an older person not naturally comfortable with digital lingo, I read many camera reviews before deciding on the Nikon S52 and decided it was the best of all worlds with the most "pros" and fewest "cons" of any camera in this price range--compactness, great photos, large LCD screen, zoon lens that doesn't extend or contract, motion detection, and a manual that is easy to read and apply. I love it--good job Nikon for listening to customers and getting it right!

I actually expected it to have a shorter lag time (not that it is comparatively bad, just my hoping for instant press-and-pic) Also, I had a question and went to Ritz Camera (the store) to ask them, and they couldn't do anything as its 2 seperate stores, which surprised me.

The last digital I bought was about 2 years ago and this was a Samsung which had HORRIBLE lag time, ran out of battery quickly, etc.. but the Nikon S52 is such a HUGE upgrade and I love it. Everything is great about it.. 3" LCD screen (which is the largest you can get on a point & shoot camera), clear pictures, easy to use, etc. I would definitely recommend this camera, especially because when you buy this particular camera, you're helping the Earth, and who wouldn't want to do that? GO GREEN!!

The Coolpix S52 (Eco Green) from Nikon is an excellent camera inside-out with loads of features.

Pros.
Dedicated portait button to take close-up shots with the right amount of exposure.
Excellent picture quality up till ISO 800.
In camera red eye fix.
D-Light editing.
Face Priority AF.
Easy to slide in your pocket.
Love the 3" bright screen.
Excellent battery life.
The Forest green color looks nice.

Cons.
It does not quite live up to its promise when it comes to shooting pictures in low light conditions. Although the night landscape mode and D-Light editing surely helps to improve the exposure but the images turn out to be a little noisy.
Secondly, the camera's plastic body some how feels cheap. The camera sure is light weight but Nikon should have used metal instead of plastic which would have given it a nice quality feel.

All in all, you won't be disappointed with this camera. I have been using it for almost three months now and even though it has some room for improvement, I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

Compact and relatively light, yet durable. Good for travel, taking quick photos of the world around you. High megapixel count keeps the photos clear even as you zoom in and fiddle around with image editing.

The only downside to S52 is picture taking in bright sunlight. Yesterday at Ritz Store I saw that a "sun shade" is available. Definitely a plus.

Trouble with automatic lens cover getting stuck shut. Percussive therapy was required, which may not be good for the long life of the camera.
Very easy camera to use, great LCD, takes a pretty good picture. Optional shooting modes and situational changes to focus, flash use, etc are easy to get to. Logical and limited menu gives plenty of adaptability without getting cumbersome.
bought this to replace a stolen S51, which I adored; this is nearly identical so far.

This camera is not good. First off: the camera is made of very cheap plastic. It feels like the camera you buy your three year old. The wheel that controls the menus feels like it would break off at any minute. Secondly, the Eco-Green aspect appears to be a total sham. Yes the camera is green, but there is no mention of the "ECO" part on the box or on any of the instruction guides. If I was a skeptic, I would think that Nikon just had a surplus of green cameras and needed a gimmick to sell the overstock. I bought this as a gift for someone who is an avid environmentalist. Alas, the only environmental impact this camera will have will be [...] the plastic waste from throwing the camera away in a year's time. Save yourself the money and save the environment. Buy something else.

This camera holds a lot of photos and video in the 1G memory card. Hence, it is quite nice to have it on trips where during the day many not be a chance to download the pictures.

I use my Nikon for a variety of things, and it just seems to be compatible with them all. I'll admit when you first get the camera, all of your pictures may not come out the way you expected, but with the S52 there is a variety of settings and you are bound to find the perfect one. This camera is just what I was looking for. Something small, accessable, big LCD, and a great picture. I would reccommend this camera to anyone, as I already have!

I had the Nikon S5, but it died for no reason. I chose to upgrade to the Nikon S52 as the Nikon S4 was no longer available. It is basically the same camera only it's Green, not Silver. The only thing is that there is a Clunky Sound comming from inside when shaking the camera. We will see how long this green Nikon S52 lives as it hides comfortably in my front pocket!

I have only had this camera for about a week, but I really like it. The camera takes great pictures, especially at night. I love the large LCD screen. It is light weight and very portable. The only issue that I have had is your hand can get in the way of the lens when taking photos.

The styling, color and design is great bu they wouldn't mean much if the camera didn't tke great peitures in all kinds of lighting conditions and situations. I own a Nikon D80 but carry this for quick shots and convenience. The results are comparable.

This camera is light weight, fast and easy to use. I use it to take a tone of pictures with my 2 year old that never stays still. The active stabilization really helps and is way better than my old 5Megapixel camera. The pictures turn out great and I am having lots of fun snapping pictures away. The battery life is great too!!

Very quick startup and low lag times make this a great camera for capturing social occasions.

Great quality feel, very nice large LCD screen with wide angle view when reviewing photos with friends.

Setup and picture menus are easy to use too, and dedicated button for portraits help.

I've been a Canon user for almost 30 years (Canon A1, EOS Ellan II, and digital Canon G1) all large or fullsize - the G1 is a tank by comparison - so I am getting used to the small size, but it is a huge plus to be able to keep this beauty in a pocket and whip it out for a quick pic.

I have a feeling that I might give this to a few close family as gifts, I like it that much! Plus the Carbon offset means that this is guilt free enjoyment all the way.

I own a larger OLYMPUS that has features that I frequently use such as sepia and B&W. Now I can pocket carry these capabilities everywhere. With the exception of a remote control shutter release the Nikon S52 has all the features of my larger OLYMPUS and more. I absolutly love it.

I really love this little camera that can take big beautiful pictures. Easy to take along, sturdy construction.(I've dropped mine more than once) This is one time that bigger is not better. The rechargeable battery is easy to remove and charge. The camera is made so you can't install it wrong. I have never used this camera and not had several people say "Wow, where did you get that! I want one."

Use of the camera itself is simple but the battery charging process leaves alot to be desired. We found ourselves fumbling to get it out and fumbling to get it back in. It took several tries of trying to get it back in with the little lever fighting us the whole way.

I just purchased my S52 [Eco Emerald Green - beautiful!] on May 5, 2008. I own a Nikon D80 DSLR with a several lenses and love it. I wanted a pocket camera to carry with me when it isn't practical to bring all of my gear. After checking out a few, I bought the S52 and am NOT disappointed. With the D80 I am used to getting superb pictures and am very picky in that regard. The S52 absolutely meets my expectations. Great portraits with good skin tone; colors in all pictures are very accurate right out of the camera.

I purchased this Nikon Eco-Green Coolpix S52 camera at Ritz Camera on May 5 and I have entered a new world of 21st century picture taking. Face detection with in-house red eye correction will always ensure perfect portrait shots. This camera deserves the title of a "small wonder." Everyone will want this Nikon when they see that rich, forest green color that screams out at you. I am impressed with the macro shots that I have taken of objects such as coins. This Coolpix has the simplicity yet does not skimp on any important features regarding photo clarity. The big, brilliant 3 inch LCD screen is your own photo shop. Who could ask for a better camera? Go for the green!
