Advanced features of the Quantaray PZ40X include: TTL auto flash D-TTL for Canon; large, full-info, backlit LCD for controlling and monitoring all settings, power zoom-bounce flash head covering 35mm focal lengths from 24-80mm, continuously variable or in 5 manual power-ratio steps, with tilt positions from zero to straight up for maximum bounce flexibility, built-in near-IR autofocus aid light that turns on automatically when needed, 5 power settings down to 1/16, flash exposure confirmation and bar graph flash range display, plus power-saving circuitry that automatically turns to Power Saving Standby mode after 5 minutes. The Quantaray PZ40X is powered by two AA alkaline or Ni-MH batteries. An optional Wide-Angle Panel provides flash coverage for lenses down to 17mm.

I like this flash for the price but am probably going to upgrade to a Canon 4 or 5 series and use this as a backup flash.

I've been looking for a hotshoe flash for my Xti since the holidays (when I bought the camera).While many 'pros' kept stearing me to the overly expensive 380EX/580EX Canon solutions, I thought I'd give one of the less expensive aftermarket models a try.I wish I could say I did alot of research before buying this flash, it just happend to be one of TWO no-Canon flashes that my local Ritz store had in stock at the time. (they also had the [$] non-LCD model)What I've gathered from a few photography forums is that I needed: Tilt (to bounce), E-TTL, Zoom and LCD readout/feedback (not sure on this last one). Swivel would of been nice, faster recycle time would of been nice too.I usually shoot with the camera in Manual mode, S/125-200, F4-F8, Auto white balance.After putting two 2600MAh NiMH AA's in and attaching it to my Xti, I took a lot of well exposed inside pictures from distances of 5-15'.The focus assist emits a small red vertically grated circle, oddly just above the center focus dot on the camera, but seemed to work/help in complete dark @ 15' or less. At greater distances, my kit lense (18-55) kept hunting for a focus.Strangely, switching from Center focus to anyone of the other dots or in automatic mode the focus assist light would not come on.When the shutter button is pressed 1/2 way, the LCD would report the focal lengh of my lense as well as giving a aproximation of the effective range of the flash (bar graph).Once the photo is taken, if the camera registered the exposure to be correct, the LCD displays "FLASH OK" for a instant. (have to look real quick after taking the photo to see it)I have had a few issues with this flash. It missfired on the first picture (camera/flash power up) more than once and (while its not the flashes fault) my older 28-70MM 2.8L lense does not report focal lengh to the flash, so the autozoom does not work with this lense.The cycle time seems to be on par/average with the camera's onboard flash, but with much more output. Dissapointing that this won't work as a "slave" off higher end flashes. Also odd, that as popular as this flash is presumed to be, there really are not very many customer reviews on it. (maybe Ritz wishes it to be more popular as it is higher margin?)

I used this pz40x II with my canon Rebel XTI for one wedding so far and I shot a little over 400-500 picturs with it.Most of witch where burnt out (overexsposed) and required a lot of work in Photoshop.I don't think you can get a flash of this caliber for the money.It's cheap and it gets the job done.If you have the money you maybe would be more happy with the 580ex II.[*]

I have enjoyed the PZ40X TTL Digital Flash w/Power Zoom for Canon. I use the Canon Rebel XT digital camera whereas the PZ40X TTL does a fine job for me. I take portraits and other professional photos. I also do alot of photography for my church. I found this PZ40X is easy to use and it gets the results that I'm after. I would suggest this flash for many reasons but I sure like the light weight.
It is a very good flash for the work I do.
