Compact, lightweight and a wide magnification range - this standard zoom lens features a wide focal length range from normal to telephoto equivalent to 29-320mm in the 35mm format. It features an Optical Image Stabilizer for up to 4-stops of effective correction even at full zoom. Since Canon's optical image stabilization system is in the lens, not in the camera, you can see the stabilized, steadier images through the viewfinder. And the circular aperture can give beautiful background blur effects. This new wide zoom ratio EF-S lens delivers excellent high-speed performance at an affordable price.

I'm normally hesitant to get a lens that covers such a wide range, as invariably it is blurry at one end of the scale or the other. Not so, with this lens. Crisp images both close up and far off, with the IS doing its job. Definite "all around" lens that will live on the camera most of the time. Only wish there was a little bit finer ability to manually focus.

The reason I love this lens so much is that it is an all-in-one for me. Prior to owning this lens I had the 28-80mm and 75-300mm lenses. It was such a pain to have to switch the lenses on and off to obtain the shots I wanted. I no longer have to carry a huge camera bag with gear to take pictures of my kid at the park...etc. The only issue I have (which really isn't a big deal overall) is that the lens creeps if you point it up or down w/out holding onto it. There is a simple locking mechanism to keep it in place when not in use. Overall this lens is a rock star!

Quick accurate focus, sharp images, this will become my standard lens for use with my 50D. The lens is compact and not too heavy. It is fast enough for general all around use.
In short I am very happy with this lens.
