The focus on this is easy to use I can see in the dark meaning it was jet black in my room and the pic came out like we were outside. I purchased the nikon D3100 as a gift for my husband who by the way complained how he didn't want the camera and it's been about three weeks and he takes it everywhere! Even to the bathroom he takes pics of everything he loves it I believe more than me..... So if he's pleased I'm pleased!

This lens is durable. For my use it passes through several teen hands a week as they photograph events for our yearbook at school. It is easy to use and only a quick demonstration for removal and use is necessary for most teens.

My first use of this lens was yesterday at an air show. Took great pics, but the autofocus occasionally would not focus on a plane, or would focus on something in the foreground instead of the plane. This is understandable with an autofocus.

Not happy with the zoom at all. Focus is fine from a distance- any closer and continually blurry. This happens on auto focus.

I love this lens! It is perfect for shooting with my daughter because you can stand back and still get great results. It is a little difficult at times getting that perfect focus, especially when chasing a running toddler, but still very manageable. I love this lens and will use it all of the time.

This is a good lens that takes great pictures, however I wish I had spent a few more dollars and had purchased the Vibration Reduction (VR) version of this lens.

I use this camera on a daily basis. It's great for full frame close ups of flowers, action shots of surfers. I have yet to try it out on the beautiful sunsets we have here but i am sure that it is going to preform wonderfully! I would recommend this camera to everyone i know! I bought my D40 and Ritz was offering this for an xtra [$], so it was a no-brainer. It truly does take consistent, clear shots and always can count on it to get close up. Is great for animals, portraits, landscape. I say don't even bother paying the extra money for the VR, however, maybe look into the 70-300 or even the 80-400, if you can afford it.

If you are going to get this lens I would recommend getting one with the VR (Vibration Reduction) Feature as I've had some pictures come out blurry at times. Other than that it's a great lens by a great company.

I recently purchased the Nikon 40 bundled package which contained this lens. I have used it for night photography with a tripod and the photos came out great. The photo quality was impressive to both family and friends. I also used it taking daylight photos of grandkids playing football, same results using handheld- excellent. I have recommended this camera and lens to my friends and two have recently purchased the same package.

This lens has a decent zoom on it, the ease of use is superb. It's easy to attach and fun to shoot with. It's a little heavy, but that can be expected from such a big lens. I would recommend a bigger zoom lens to someone that really wanted far shots, but for everyday zooming, this is nice.

A nice lens to bring the kids up close during their activities without disturbing them by 'taking a picture'

The Nikon AF-S lens system is pretty fast to focus; you need to figure out your meter settings and focus settings in order to fully utilize this lens. Not hard to do but like anything else, time spent learning your camera and your lenses will really pay off in terms of the kind of photos you will take

I don't have anything against other brands, I am just comfortable with Nikon cameras and Nikkor lenses. I get consistently crisp and colorful output every time. This is a great lens at an unbeatable price. The only thing that I would like to see is a better lens hood mount, otherwise, this is a great lens for sitting on the side lines on a sunny day.

Good starter medium zoom lens, but the VR version is better due to the vibration reduction which could cause a problem with some shots. A good tripod is almost a must.

A great lens, offers much more flexibility than the standard 18-55 that comes with most Nikon units. Although somewhat slower and harder to focus, the unit is still fast enough to catch great action shots from a greater distance. We've had so much fun with this lens that we are considering the next size zoom lens from Nikkor.

I needed this lens because of its ability to change AF/MF for my Nikon D40X. The range 55-200 is decent. I found that it was adequate for most of my shots. It worked well with moving things (i.e. a bird flying along the surf). It focused quickly but I could quickly change to manual focus for an intricate scene.

This was a graduation gift for my daughter. She has taken several advanced photo classes and knows what she is doing with the camera. It started acting funny within the first week and by the end of the first month refused to focus at all! Luckily, I had purchased the service plan so it will be fixed/replaced. She was able to use the other lens that came with the pkg. however, it did not have the distance focusing that she really enjoys to get those close-up shots across a soccer/lacrosse field.

I have had a Nikon D50 for years with no issues at all. My caution would be to definitely get the service plan and use your camera a lot as soon as you buy it since the problem showed up almost immediately which seems to be the way things work with electronics. If it is going to break, it will break sooner rather than later (or the day AFTER the warranty expires!)

Sometimes was slow to focus on a very distant object but works well for capturing distances of more than 50-75m. Great for a backup but not recommended for every day use!

This lens has worked for me in shooting wildlife photography and some nature. Sometimes takes a little longer than I'd like to wait to focus...but over all very pleased with the lens.

I like this lens and use it on my camera when I only want to bring one lens. I wish I had upgraded to one w/ image stbilization which would help improve performance. This lens did not survive a 4 foot drop test performed by my 3 year old :-)

This lense works great! It doesn't have the vibration reduction capabilities which worried me at first but I haven't had any problems with it. The pictures turn out crip and clear. :)It's also really light so that makes it easy to stay pretty stable while shooting.

this lens does not work well for sports, or holding it by hand but it is ok for landscapes and still subjects from 55 to 80mm.
I wish I would have gotten the vr version of this lens so I could hold it in my hands without blur at distances over 80mm.
spend the money on a better, and faster lens then this one

Thought I had a great camera, FUJI s7000 with zoom lens and wide-angle lens UNTIL I purchased my NIKON. Can't begin to describe the difference I saw in my photos. I have recently began setting up a home studio and comparing the photos between my FUJI and the NIKON, I couldn't believe the difference. I also make sports photos, the action shots can't compare. You can actually see the softballs at point of impact! The teams are impressed. I feel with a few more classes I can change my classification from enthusiast to semi-pro with the equipment I now own. NIKON's products are wonderful. Also purchased to point and shoot NIKON cameras for my husband and daughter. They love their products also.

I go whitewater kayaking and was looking for a camera to take pictures from rocks on the side of the river. This camera has full sport mode and with the use of this lens we can see water droplets. ...talk about catching a moment in time!

We also go hiking and the scenery pictures are spectacular.

This lens was good, but it was ultimately exchanged for the VR (Vibration Reduction) version which allow sharper pictures hand-held at the long end. Unless you are always using a tripod you should probably upgrade.

The lens came as a part of a combo pack, and thankfully it did! I love to take close ups, especially of the kids who move around like crazy! This lens is quick, but I wish it had the vibration reduction feature for some shots.

Loved the lens at first. I have had it for 14 months. I had to return to Nikon because af quit. Three months later I am sending it back for the same problem. I had the same problem with my 18-55mm kit lens on the D40. I would up grade to at least the VR and if you can afford it the 18-200mm VR. I should point out that in the last 14 months I have close to 5000 photos with this lens.

I purchased this lens for my D50. And while I've gotten great photos out of it, I would recommend upgrading to the newer model that has VR (vibration reduction). I have shaky hands...and it shows easily at the upper zoom range. I have inconsistant results and have a tough time bracing myself enough to get clear shots without a tripod. But a good lens if you're a pretty still photographer!

I travel quit a bit so I wanted a telephoto lens that would be very compact and easily fit into my small camera bag. This lens is perfect. It's not a particularly fast lens and not the best for low light situations but works well for general use. The image quality is very good and lightweight.

I didn't want to spend more than $200 for a zoom lens that would compliment the 18-55mm Nikon Lens I bought with my D70S. I'm very pleased with the sharpness and small size. My only concern is the plastic mount. The dealer told me they have had no complaints, and I don't intend to change lenses frequently.

I bought this lens to try and capture some pictures during sporting events. Unfortunately this lens just didn't cut it for what I was looking for. I ended up getting alot of blurry shots.. it was actually quite disappointing. I'm sure this lens would function adequately for stills, but it's not great for motion. I ended up upgrading to the Nikon 2161... Twice as expensive, but I had much better luck with it.
