Great for macro work, flowers, wildlife etc. Though it is a long zoom, it has a very close working distance of around 4 feet. You can zoom in on a flower or insect that would be too far away with a macro lens, and fill the frame. Soft edge focus is not an issue, since the background will be out of focus anyway. It has curved aperture plates so you don't get wierd hexagonal blobs in the out-of-focus parts of the shot.
I got it for portrait/grab shots at weddings etc. but got hooked on it when I tried a macro shot.
With the Sony system, the Image Stabilization is built into the camera, so you don't pay a premium per lens to get the "Vibration Reduction" feature.
It takes a noticeable time to rack from close focus to infinity, but that doesn't trouble me. All in all, a surprisingly good lens for a great price.

This lens is pretty awesome and[...]on picture quality. The only issue I have is that it's really heavy (which is understandable considering its a 300mm lens). If you buy this lens, buy a tripod along with it.

We use this to focus in on wildlife (loons, etc.), scenery, and bridal couples at family/friend weddings without being intrusive. It is a great accompanyment to the kit lens (18-70) of the Sony a350.

Let's start off by being realistic; when you purchase any lens, much less a quasi-telephoto lens for [$]your expectations for outstanding performance should not be high, with that thought in mind, boy, will you be in for a pleasant, if not a startling surprise when you receive Sony's 75-300/ f4.5-5.6 lens! Attached to my 700A, focusing is clear, crisp and fast. Lens quality for price paid is outstanding. Very nice for outdoor activities be it sports to landscape. Racked-out or in tight, exposure and picture quality are very, very good. Due to the inherent nature of portraits, being a "little soft" around the edges is not a bad thing. Can you find fault, sure if you paid $500... the lens is a little slow, it could be a little sharper, the material used a little better. That said, I doubt for the money you will find a more versatile, responsive and easy-to-use lens that you can put through the paces and receive more-than acceptable results.

I photograph animals. The detail of the fur and feathers is outstanding, compared to my other 75-300 lens. If my other lens hadn't pooped, I would have never realized the sharpness I could achieve at such a reasonable price. This lens is quieter and faster focusing inside and outside than I was used to and I would definitely recommend this product.

As a rank amateur, I don't feel comfortable rating this, but I want a chance to win the prize!

When trying to take a long distance photo with this lens, you have to hold the camera impossibly still. A tri-pod would do it, but I don't want to carry one. Any tips for me on this, please advise.

I bought this lens originally for the ability to zoom past the standard kit lens. The lens is decent at best, its better then nothing but far form anything special. It's not bad at the smaller end of the range but when you zoom in past the 170-200+ you lose the sharpness and contrast. At the 300mm length your almost wasting your time on wildlife, the quality isn't there.

Its a very very cheap lens and you getting what you pay for. I'm getting rid of mine for the Sony 70-300G lens, are far superior lens in every aspect if you can afford the price.

Does a nice job producing blurred backgrounds for close subjects, simulating macro effects. Not as crystal clear as a more expensive lens, but better than expected for a "kit" lens. I doubt I'll be replacing it anytime soon.

I am very happy with the lens. I have taken 123 shots with in my A300 SONY CSLR camera an haven't missed a shot! See my photos at 300mm. The one of the weed was at 4ft. and the one down the street was at 300mm, the distance to the car, house and fence was 1200ft!

I take pictures of my daughters activities. I am able to get clear shots of her riding her horse in an arena from the stands. The images are crisp and look so close. I love my camera and lens!

Very nice high power zoom. I highly recommend a lens filter to protect the lens and provide a sharper picture. Also, get a nice mono-pod. It'll make all the difference when your shooting pictures at a distance.
