I just bought mine 3 days ago, took it to 2 (paid)events today. I am highly disappointed in the front focus issue at 17mm/2.8. I used both my D300 and D70s and both had front focus issues. Anything over 17mm were great, but wide angle shots (the primary reason I got this lense) are horrible, especially if your main subjects are humans and they are out of focus, while the flower or cake in front of them is sharp as a whistle. It's going back to the store tomorrow.

I have a Nikon 70S and wanted at least one really good lens. The Nikon equivalent at 4x the cost was not an option. Using a monopod, I was able to caputre some beautiful low light pictures. The 18mm (moderate wide) to 50mm (moderate telephoto)makes this a great normal lens. I'm very happy with it thus far.

[Nikon D40]-You don't get auto focus on the D40 (which is what I like...I have to do my own focusing). I tested it with the D40's noise reduction both on and off (handles noise very well even at 800 ISO). It's much heavier than the default Nikkor AF 18-55mm plastic lens so secure your neck strap. Finding the focal point may be challenging, but that's what we like in professional photography. I see that as an advantage towards obtaining a film look to your images. I prefer film looking shots over crystal clear digital. This lens helps achieve that film look. Pound for pound I like the lens. However I do feel it's over priced by at least 150 dollars.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I love this little guy! I decided to purchase the Tamron 17-55 F/2.8 because I needed an affordable wide "walk-around" lens when I travel to Hong Kong in the summer.
It is a sharp lens, even at F/2.8!
What sold me on this lens, however, was the maximum aperture of F/2.8. Shooting wide open allows me to take photos in low light. Also at the widest, it allows for great portraits with bokeh (background blur).
The build is good for the price. It is a bit plastic-y but it feels sturdy and durable. The zoom ring is firm, but not too firm that it requires brute force to turn. My only peeve is with the supplied lens hood. Taking off the lens hood requires some force.
Overall, I am very pleased with this lens.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I normally dont buy 3rd party lenses. But this lens along with the Sigma 10-20 are now on my camera 90% of the time.
Great lens for the price. Very sharp ( even when shot wide open).
This lens is 1/3rd the cost of the Nikkor 17-55 and 1/3rd the weight with same picture quality. I compared both the Nikkor and the Tamron and see no difference in picture quality ( shot with d200 and d2x ).
Save yourself some money and get this lens ( with the warranty). Put the cash you saved towards a trip where you can take some great pictures with your new lens.
The only disadvantage is that the lense is made mostly of plastic. But it seems to be very durable and if it breaks I have the extended warranty on it anyway.
