I got this lens with giftcards I got for Christmas. For what you pay for, it is very nice. I'd been looking into getting a more powerful telephoto lens for wildlife photography I have been doing, and so far, this has served its purpose well. I'd recommend this to photo students or enthusiasts. If you are doing more professional work, I would recommend investing into the g-series equivalent. It's zoom is nice and smooth and the manual focus good for fine adjustments. The autofocus is fast enough. The only thing I find difficult with it is its weight; it is a bit heavy. The aperature is not well suited for low-lit or nighttime material without a flash, but that is often expected with these kinds of telephoto lenses.

This product has been a great addition to my equipement! It has made my photo sessions with my clients more comfortable bc with a 55mm or a 70mm I would hav to be really close to get good close up shots with this lens sometimes... now i can be out of their personal space and still get some great close ups!!!

Great for macro work, flowers, wildlife etc. Though it is a long zoom, it has a very close working distance of around 4 feet. You can zoom in on a flower or insect that would be too far away with a macro lens, and fill the frame. Soft edge focus is not an issue, since the background will be out of focus anyway. It has curved aperture plates so you don't get wierd hexagonal blobs in the out-of-focus parts of the shot.
I got it for portrait/grab shots at weddings etc. but got hooked on it when I tried a macro shot.
With the Sony system, the Image Stabilization is built into the camera, so you don't pay a premium per lens to get the "Vibration Reduction" feature.
It takes a noticeable time to rack from close focus to infinity, but that doesn't trouble me. All in all, a surprisingly good lens for a great price.

This lens is pretty awesome and[...]on picture quality. The only issue I have is that it's really heavy (which is understandable considering its a 300mm lens). If you buy this lens, buy a tripod along with it.

We use this to focus in on wildlife (loons, etc.), scenery, and bridal couples at family/friend weddings without being intrusive. It is a great accompanyment to the kit lens (18-70) of the Sony a350.

Let's start off by being realistic; when you purchase any lens, much less a quasi-telephoto lens for [$]your expectations for outstanding performance should not be high, with that thought in mind, boy, will you be in for a pleasant, if not a startling surprise when you receive Sony's 75-300/ f4.5-5.6 lens! Attached to my 700A, focusing is clear, crisp and fast. Lens quality for price paid is outstanding. Very nice for outdoor activities be it sports to landscape. Racked-out or in tight, exposure and picture quality are very, very good. Due to the inherent nature of portraits, being a "little soft" around the edges is not a bad thing. Can you find fault, sure if you paid $500... the lens is a little slow, it could be a little sharper, the material used a little better. That said, I doubt for the money you will find a more versatile, responsive and easy-to-use lens that you can put through the paces and receive more-than acceptable results.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
